GRESHAM, Ore. – A woman who seriously injured an infant by partially submerging her face in boiling water was given a 6-year jail term by a judge on Friday.

In July, a jury found Dawna Bigelow guilty of causing physical injury with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors said Bigelow submerged Kellee Kuhl's face in a pot of boiling water. The girl was 5 months old at the time. She has since recovered from her physical injuries.

Bigelow insisted she does not remember the incident and said she would never do anything to hurt someone intentionally.

She and her husband apologized to Kellee’s family, who were present at the proceedings.

Bigelow’s lawyer argued for a shorter sentence since the child was not disfigured from the incident, but Judge Richard Baldwin disagreed and sentenced Bigelow to 70 months in jail, followed by three years of probation.

She will also have to pay $7,000 in restitution.

After the court proceeding were concluded, Kellee’s mother, Jessica Mitchell, said "I do forgive Dawna, I can’t hold a grudge, I do wish we knew what happened… I’m happy with the results today because I think that what happened deserves consequences."

Kellee was not present at the proceedings. Mitchell said she did not want to have the child in the courtroom because she believes that Dawna Bigelow did care for her child.

She also said that she felt Bigelow is too scared to admit she remembers what happened.

She also said the incident has been traumatic for the child and her family.
