Private snow plows doing a booming business
By Luke Duecy & KOMO Staff
SEATTLE -- With Seattle roads so bad, many people are tending to them themselves by turning to private contractors to help clear away the snow and ice.
Mike Halekakis is not happy that city plows still haven't cleared-off his street in Queen Anne. "I have not seen a single plow on our street," he said. While Abram Kanzer is taking matters into his own hands, using a Tupperware lid to dig his car out from the snow. "I saw a plow go by and it wasn't even plowing," he said. Both wish they could just hire a private contractor to plow their roads instead -- perhaps someone like Sean Moore with SSB Construction, who clears ice and snow for a living. "For the size of Seattle, you'd think there's a lot more plows then there are - but, you seldom even see a plow around here," Moore said. We caught up with Sean plowing a parking lot in South Seattle. He says he'd love to do the same thing to city streets. "People call all the time asking if we can just plow their road," he said. But, he's not allowed. The city doesn't let private contractors clear public roads. So, businesses like IM Parking are doing it themselves, renting mini-plows to clear away both their private both and sections of city streets. Sean charges $100 an hour, but it looks worth it. And when we told Mike about Sean, he said he'd pass along the idea to his neighbors. "I think they'd welcome it quite a bit; I think it would be a lot better for some of us if the plow could come around," Moore said. |
