KING COUNTY, Wash. -- The search is on for a man believed to be responsible for a string of espresso stand robberies in the area.
Eight stands - six of which are located in unincorporated south King County, one in Auburn and one in Kent - have been robbed since Nov. 2. All of the incidents took place in the afternoon and early evening hours, and three of them were hit on the same day, Dec. 30.
Investigators said the robber gets out of his car, walks up to the stand and demands money. In one instance, he displayed a Taser gun. One barista said he claimed he had a gun in his pocket.
The incidents have left a number of area baristas spooked. Amanda Eddington came face-to-face with the robber while working at the Java Java Coffee Company in Kent.
"I hope he gets caught so he stops doing this to people," she said. "I mean, I was shaking about it for a couple weeks."
Amy Russell, owner of the Kind Grinds in Burien, said she's done everything she can to protect her employees, but the criminals always seem to find a way in. Her stand was the second one robbed.
"It seems like every time we upgrade, someone breaks in and steals what we put in. So there's not much we can do," she said.
Several of the stands are equipped with surveillance cameras. Baristas hope footage from the cameras will help police track down the man.
Detectives believe the same man, sketched above, is responsible for all of the robberies. He is believed to be between 40 and 50 years of age.
The man is said to drive a 2003 or 2004 model of Mitsubishi Montero Sports XLS of a red or maroon shade. A license plate number was not available.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the King County Sheriff's Office at (206) 296-3311.
