PORTLAND, Ore. – A 4-year-old boy who fell out of an upper story apartment window Wednesday evening has died, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Police say the fall may be an accident, but homicide and child abuse team detectives were called in to investigate.
The incident happened at the Miraflores apartments at 8925 North Newell Avenue about 7:15 p.m., police say.
The apartments house low-income families.
Medics took the boy to a hospital, but doctors could not save him.
Witnesses tell KATU that the child fell from a third-story window in the apartment complex.
Those witnesses also say the boy's head hit a planter during the fall from the window.
Some residents say they started collecting signatures on a petition last year after two children survived falls from windows at the same apartments. They wanted the facility to put in windows that were safer for children.
The residents say they stopped collecting petition signatures after being threatened with eviction.
The boy's name has not been released.
