FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - An elderly woman was killed when a pickup driven by her close friend hit her in a supermarket parking lot at about noon Sunday, police said.
Officers responded to the parking lot of the Top Food & Drug store, at 31515 20th Avenue S., after receiving calls about the accident. Federal Way police and witnesses said the victim and the pickup driver, both women in their 80s, had been shopping together at the grocery and returned to the car. The driver got into the vehicle and started it up while waiting for her friend to get in. As the victim was getting in the pickup, the driver put it into reverse and accidentally hit the accelerator. The open truck door struck the victim and knocked her to the pavement. She died at the scene. Witnesses said the driver of the pickup was crying and inconsolable after the accident. Family members arrived quickly and took her home after the accident. Witnesses said the two women were close friends who frequently did their grocery shopping together. Police did not identify the driver or the victim. Officers said it was an accident, and there was no criminal intent on the part of the driver. No charges will be filed. |
