Snohomish County, union tentatively agree on furlough days

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. -- The county has reached a tentative agreement with its largest union on several measures that equate to about a 4 percent reduction in pay.

Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) have tentatively agreed to a combination of 11 furlough days and shorter weeks, which non-union representatives would also take.

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon said he has also asked the county council to expand the county's hiring freeze.

The furlough days and the hiring freeze, Reardon said, would cut $6.75 million in spending, effectively eliminating the need for any further cuts this year.

"we have set a reduction target that we believe is a realistic assessment of our expected revenue declines for the year," Reardon said. "The goal is to do this once."

The Snohomish County Council will consider both measures on Tuesday.

If approved by union members and the Snohomish County Council, the furlough agreement would take effect on April 16.
