STANWOOD, Wash. -- An elderly man was critically injured when he was struck by a Community Transit bus Tuesday morning.

The collision occurred just before noon in the 20400 block of Marine View Drive near Stanwood. The location is near a senior home in the Warm Beach community.

The 86-year-old man was crossing Marine Drive in a motorized wheelchair when a Community Transit bus turning right onto Marine Drive from the Warm Beach Senior Community Center struck the man in the crosswalk, said Rebecca Hover with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses said they could do nothing to stop the accident, which happened in just a few seconds.

"I turned my head and it was already too late; she (the driver) had already hit him and he just went under the bus," said witness Alana Dewees. "She didn't even know what she hit. And she asked what she hit, and I said, 'You just hit a person.' And she screamed, 'No!'"

Medics airlifted the man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. There's no word on his exact condition, but the injuries are said to be life-threatening.

Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the crash but say no citations have been issued.

On Tuesday evening, the victim was listed in serious but stable condition.
