SHERWOOD, Ore. -- Prince the poodle is one lucky pooch. It seems he has his very own guardian angel, who also happens to be his neighbor.
On Wednesday morning, Timothy Dehning heard a startling sound. He ran outside and saw that Prince, his neighbor, had been hit by a car. He rushed over to help, but found the dog lying unconscious and feared it was too late.
"At that point, the dog had died in my hands," he said.
Too late or not, Dehning decided to help Prince fight for his life. He then did the only thing he could think of -- mouth-to-snout resuscitation.
"I just wiped his nose off a little bit. His jaw was in my hand. I just closed his jaw, and I just actually stuck his whole snout in my mouth," he said.
Dehning said he wasn't even sure it would work. He just remembered the things he'd learned watching Animal Planet, and tried his best to keep air moving through Prince's body.
In the end, it paid off.
"I knew it was working because I could see his chest rise up," he said. "I continued to give him a couple of breaths, and I watched."
Prince was rushed to the Tualatin Emergency Veneterinary Clinic. Amazingly, he doesn't have any broken bones.
"He's a little loopy from the medicine that they're giving him, but he's doing OK. He's doing good," said his owner, James Fogle.
Fogle can't thank Dehning enough for coming to Prince's rescue.
"You really gotta give him a lot of credit, because I don't know if that's something that most people would be able to actually do," he said.
Prince is back at home with his family, and nursing his cuts and scrapes.
