SEATTLE -- Our Problem Solver investigation revealed a dangerous situation with overweight trucks on our roads - and it is getting results.

King County council member Larry Phillips saw our report and is asking the ombudsman to investigate one of the county's own departments.

County drivers came to us desperate and concerned for the public's safety.

Now, at the direction of council member Phillips, they'll have the chance to tell a county investigator what they told me.

Every day, King County Solid Waste trucks make dozens of trips from transfer stations around the county to the landfill in Maple Valley.

Our investigation revealed that since 2006, solid waste has had more than 19,000 overweight trucks on the road -- some more than 30,000 overweight.

In response, Solid Waste pointed to its clean safety record. But the State Patrol was very clear -- those kinds of overweights are very dangerous, and they are also against the law.

Now the county ombudsman will investigate and report their results directly to the King County Council.
