Summary

Warm rain aloft is falling into some freezing air near the surface, and that could make things pretty icy along the Cascade Passes today.

Beware of freezing rain in the passes today
SNOQUALMIE PASS - If your plans take you across the Cascades today, prepare for slick roads and extra delays due to freezing rain.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. for the Cascades below 5,000 feet. A warm, rainy system is moving through the area this morning, but there is still some cold air funneling through the passes from Eastern Washington.

As that warm rain falls into that cold air near the ground, the rain freezes into ice, making any exposed surface rather slick.

While the precipitation is expected to begin as sleet or snow Thursday morning, it should change over to freezing rain later in the morning. Then, freezing rain is expected to fall through the day, before the cold air scours out later this evening and it all changes back to plain old rain.

Even though the forecast remains rather wet through the weekend, it will also be well warm enough to where it'll just be rain in the passes through Monday night.
