Seattle trashes 400 trash cans, angers some residents
SEATTLE -- In hopes of saving some $160,0000, the city is removing roughly 400 trash cans from its park and asking residents to take home the trash with them instead.
But money-saving or not, some residents think the idea is rubbish.
"I thought it was a little bit stupid," said Wayne Robinson.
To Robinson, the past weekend's activities prove the city shouldn't have removed all trash cans in some parks.
"You see trash lying around now," he said.
And Robinson would know. He's been picking up litter at Sacajawea Playfield ever since the city required people to take their garbage home two months ago. Nearby trash cans at bus stops are now overflowing.
"If they're not going to have a can there, they should come pick up the trash because you can't to depend on everyone picking up the trash," he said.
The city is considering the use of $4,000 solar-powered compacting trash cans, which don't have to be emptied as frequently.
City officials said some of the trash cans will be left in place, but some residents plan on contacting them in an attempt to keep all trash cans around.
