Near whiteout conditions in Whatcom County
FERNDALE - One of the hardest hit places for snow Sunday was in Whatcom County.
Snow totals ranged from 8-15" in many locations around Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine and Bellingham. Gusty winds to 30-35 mph are making for blowing snow and very low visibilities.
The Washington State Patrol reports several spinouts along I-5 and other western Whatcom County highways. One truck pulling two others spun out on I-5 near Blaine and wiped out the center cable barrier.
Troopers now say chains are recommended on I-5 starting at milepost 145, which is just north of the Skagit/Whatcom County line.
Troopers say people are keeping speeds down around 30-35 mph along I-5. The storm is expected to continue through the day and the Department of Transportation crews are recommending that drivers stay put in that area unless they absolutely have to travel.
