LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - The Cowlitz County sheriff's office says a 3-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool at the family home near Longview.

Capt. Mark Nelson says the boy was left playing alone for less than five minutes Thursday evening, and his mother found him at the bottom of the 3-foot-deep, above-ground pool.

Attempts to revive Colby Rice failed. He was declared dead at St. John Medical Center in Longview.
