Teens hurt in Cascades van crash
By Associated Press
BLEWETT PASS, Wash. (AP) - A van carrying 12 teenagers and an adult driver crashed on Blewett Pass in the Cascade Range in Washington state, injuring several people.
Trooper Dave Phelps of the Washington State Patrol said the van was carrying members of the Northwest Youth Corps from Eugene, Ore., a youth development and outdoor education organization. They were headed north to do trail-maintenance work in the Twisp area of north-central Washington when the van went off the road and rolled down an embankment about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The passengers included 12 teens ages 16 to 19, and the adult driver. Phelps said all were taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg, but only five or six were treated for minor injuries and then released. The accident occurred along U.S. 97 about one mile south of the summit on Blewett Pass. U.S. 97 runs north-south along the east slope of the Cascades, between two of the main highways across the mountain range, Interstate 90 and U.S. 2. The cause of the accident was under investigation, Phelps said. The passengers' identities were not immediately available, but two were from Nevada and Illinois, Phelps said. |
