1 hurt as freight trains collide in Tacoma yard
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman says two slow-moving freight trains have collided in a Tacoma, Wash., switching yard, injuring one person, derailing a locomotive and damaging some containers.
Spokesman Gus Melonas says about 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel have spilled but cleanup crews are on scene and no waterway has been affected.
One engineer was taken to a hospital for evaluation Monday evening after a BNSF locomotive pulling 12 freight cars struck the side of a departing Union Pacific freight train, hitting that train about 10 cars back from its locomotive. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Main freight and passenger rail lines through the area are not affected.
Melonas says no hazardous materials were involved.
