CORBETT, Ore. - A man who was a witness in the case against a woman accused of killing and dismembering her husband shot and killed himself last week, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

On the evening of Wednesday, June 10, sheriff's deputies responded to a call at a home on East Haines Road in Corbett and found Richard Swanson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Swanson was a witness in the case against 56-year-old Hazelynn Stomps (pictured at right), who is accused of shooting and killing her 60-year-old husband, Gerald Stomps, and then dismembering his body.  Investigators said they found pieces of jaw and teeth on the couple's property - pieces that matched his dental records.

For the past 15 years, Swanson lived in a house that he rented from the Stomps.  He had told investigators that he saw smoke coming from the couple's property.  His account coincided with the time detectives believe Hazelynn Stomps was burning her husband's body.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Swanson was never a suspect in the case, despite rumors that he was somehow involved.  They said he had been suffering from anxiety, health issues and a long history of depression that caused him to make attempts on his life in the past.
