SEATTLE - A man in his 50s died after he was shot in the chest Friday night in "The Jungle," a brushy area of homeless encampments near the junction of Interstate 5 and Interstate 90.
Police responded to the scene at about 11:35 p.m. after receiving reports of as many as five shots fired near South Royal Brougham Way and Airport Way South.
When officers arrived in the area, they found the victim underneath the freeway near South Atlantic Street and Airport Way South.
A preliminary investigation found that the shooting might have stemmed from an argument between the victim and another individual who camps in the same area of The Jungle.
The victim was struck at least once in the chest. He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died in surgery.
The suspects, two or three men, ran southbound underneath the freeway. Officers set up containment and a K-9 police dog tracked for a time, but officers did not locate the suspects - despite help from the King County Sheriff's helicopter.
Violence periodically flares up in Seattle's Jungle. Another man was shot to death there in September 2008.
