Driver hits teen, crashes into barber shop
By KOMO Staff
AUBURN, Wash. -- A van driven by an elderly woman lost control and stuck a teen walking on the sidewalk before careening into a nearby barber shop, spraying the barber and a customer with debris.
The accident occurred just after 11 a.m. near the corner of Main Street and Auburn Way, said Officer Cole Glazier with the Auburn Police Department. Glazier says the driver, a woman in her late 70s, was going west on Main Street she lost control of her van and struck an 18-year-old man walking on the sidewalk. The force of the impact knocked him several feet away, police said. The van then struck a light pole at "D" Street and crashed into the front of the Auburn Valley Barber Shop on East Main Street. The teen didn't appear to have any obvious injuries, Glazier said, but he was being taken to a local hospital to be checked out. A passenger in the van, a man in his 60s, was also taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A barber and customer inside the building were treated at the scene for minor injuries sustained from flying debris. It didn't appear the driver was injured. Glazier says they aren't sure yet what caused the driver to lose control.
