Suspect charged in SUV theft from Sea-Tac

SEATAC, Wash. - Multiple charges were filed Thursday against a Seattle man who allegedly stole an SUV from a family unloading luggage at Sea-Tac Airport and flipped it after smashing into seven police cars last month.
The suspect, Anthony Craig Martin, 37, was charged in King County Superior Court with motor vehicle theft, attempting to elude a police vehicle and two counts of first-degree malicious mischief. If convicted of all charges he faces a sentence of 43 to 57 months in prison, said King County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Dan Donohoe. In addition, Martin automatically will serve two years for violating the terms of an earlier release from prison, Donohoe said. The SUV theft happened just before 7 p.m. June 13 when a Cadillac Escalade was stolen from the departures' drop-off area at the airport. The vehicle had an OnStar system installed, which allowed OnStar operators to track the SUV's location and direct sheriff's deputies to it. The car thief headed north on First Avenue South, then east on Highway 518, then south on Interstate 5 as more police started chasing him, according to earlier reports. When deputies caught up with the driver, he tried to accelerate away, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph. "The top speed that I heard to be broadcast was 110 mph," said Deputy Robin Ostrum of the King County Sheriff's Office. The suspect hit several vehicles during the pursuit, intentionally ramming seven police cruisers, according to police. The thief eventually made a hard U-turn in SeaTac and raced the wrong way down an on-ramp on South 188th Street where the road passes under I-5. The vehicle rolled several times and caught fire, but the driver was not seriously injured. Detective Todd Morrell, who was involved in the pursuit, later said it "ranks as one of the most reckless and dangerous I have witnessed." If not for the quick actions of the officers on the scene, he said, Martin "very likely would have collded with an innocent motorist (or) pedestrian." |
