SEATTLE -- One person was rushed to the hospital following an officer-involved shooting late Monday afternoon.
Police spokesman Jeff Kappel said two officers spotted a suspicious Lexus with a non-matching plate parked in the lot of a convenience store on 20th Avenue South and South Jackson Street at 5:16 p.m. When they approached the car, the four who were inside the car grew confrontational. The driver tried to run over the police, prompting one of the officers to open fire, Kappel said. The driver then tried to flee and sped off westbound on Jackson. Within a half a block, police said all four men jumped out of the moving car. The Lexus continued to coast down the street until it crashed into the patrol car of a responding officer. Three of the men were taken into police custody. One was taken to Harborview Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the hand. One man remains at large, but a description was not available. The officer inside the hit car was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Police recovered a handgun one of the men had dropped in the street. Detectives said that gun was loaded, but it's not clear if the two officers who first approached the car knew the men were armed. The officer who opened fire has been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard procedure during the investigation of officer-involved shootings. |
