SEATTLE - A 44-year-old bicyclist is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after he crashed into a van that was making a left turn in front of him near Seward Park.

Police and medics were called to the scene, at the intersection of Lake Washington Boulevard South and South Orcas Street, at about 6:35 p.m. on Friday.

Investigating officers said the 2006 Chevy van was heading north on Lake Washington Boulevard when its 29-year-old driver started to make a left turn onto Orcas Street.

As the van crossed the center line, the bicyclist slammed into the van's passenger door.

"He didn't even have a chance to hit the brake or nothing, it happened so fast," said one woman who witnessed the accident.

Seattle Fire Department medics treated the bicyclist at the scene then rushed him to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Hours later the man was still listed in critical condition.

A drug recognition officer completed an evaluation of the van driver for signs of impairment, but none were noted, police said.
