Men shed clothes to save school staffers
VASHON, Wash. -- While some parents are holding car washes, raffles, and bake sales to stave off budget cuts at local schools, a group of guys has decided on something a bit more revealing.
This group of 12 men has taken off their clothes and they say they've done it for the sake of the kids.
"By day they are attorneys and bankers, at night they are windsurfers, kayakers, farmers, musicians, cyclists," said Kris Thompson who calls herself a co-producer on the project.
What exactly is the project you may ask?
It's a beefcake calendar, "a la Calendar Girls...if you know the story," said Thompson.
This group commutes daily on the ferry from Vashon Island to downtown Seattle and that's where they came up with the idea. So naturally they've dubbed themselves, "The Dreamboats."
Each month of the calendar features one of the Dreamboats posing in the buff, with their personal areas covered by props from their individual hobby of choice.
The goal is to sell 500 calendars and raise $10,000.
"The cause was really obvious," said Thompson.
Obvious to them, but maybe not to others.
"Our local Vashon Island School District is really struggling," explained Thompson.
The district may have to lay off 11 staffers. So the Dreamboats have pledged to give every cent from their calendar to their island schools.
Treading carefully, Thompson said the group recognizes the calendar is adult-themed and not educational.
"The school district would like to be clear in that they are not involved in this project," Thompson said.
The Dreamboats, nearly all fathers themselves, say they couldn't agree more.
The district has, however, agreed to take any donations the men's efforts raise.
The calendars will be go on sale in September for $20 each. A launch party is planned at the Luna Cafe on Vashon Island Sept. 3. After that, you'll be able to find them at multiple businesses across the island.
