Seattle camp counselor killed in Maine
PORTLAND, Maine -- A camp counselor from Seattle was killed after being struck by an SUV in Maine on Monday.
Corrie Lazar was walking with two other counselors from the nearby Camp Laurel along Route 41 in Mount Vernon, Maine, when an approaching SUV lost control and ran into her, said Capt. Jon Perkins with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office.
Lazar was pronounced dead at the scene. A second counselor was rushed to a hospital in Augusta for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The third counselor dove into the woods as the SUV approached and was not injured.
The driver of the SUV was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. Perkins says they believe alcohol was a factor.
"Camp Laurel has lost a counselor, part of our camp family, in a tragic accident outside of camp," said Keith Klein, camp director. "We are mourning her passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this wonderful young woman."
Grief counselors were on hand to help staff and campers cope with Lazar's death.
