OLYMPIA -- A 22-year-old motorcyclist speeding down I-5 was seriously injured when he crashed into the back of an SUV early Sunday morning, troopers said.

Scott Penley was weaving through traffic in the southbound lanes at speeds witnesses said were over 100 mph just before 1 a.m., said Trooper Guy Gill with the Washington State Patrol.

About a mile past the exit to U.S. 12 West, Penley tried to maneuver between two cars but struck the rear corner of a 1999 Ford Expedition, throwing him from his motorcycle, Gill said.

Penley was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of serious injuries. Both southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for an hour for the investigation and airlift.

Gill says alcohol was a factor in the crash.
