WASHINGTON - A soldier from Elma, Wash. has been killed in Iraq.

The Defense Department says 24-year-old Sgt. Mickel D. Garrigus died Saturday of wounds suffered when a roadside bomb detonated next to his vehicle near Taji, Iraq.

He was a military policeman assigned to the the 543rd Military Police Company, 91st Police Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, New York. He had been re-assigned from a Fort Lewis unit

Garrigus graduated from Elma High School in 2001. A memorial will be held at Fort Drum and that Garrigus will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

His friends are raising money to help send Garrigus' siblings to New York for the memorial. Donations to the Garrigus Fund can be made at any Timberland Bank branch.

He is survived by his wife and son.
