Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announces the 1,000th signer of the climate change pact.
SEATTLE - The 1,000th U.S. mayor today pledged to reduce carbon emissions in his city. Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels began the move in 2005 to get fellow mayors to sign on to the "Mayors Climate Protection Agreement."
With the signature of Mesa Arizona Mayor Scott Smith at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Seattle, 86 million Americans now live in cities promising to reduce carbon emissions by 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.
Mayor Smith said he welcomed the opportunity to join 999 of his fellow mayors.
"We may not agree on specific action points, but we are united in a common goal of responsible environmental stewardship," said Smith and he signed the agreement.
Mayor Nickels said, "We are leading by example in the fight against global warming and representing America to the world."
Nickels will lead a delegation of U.S. mayors heading to Denmark in December to support President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton during the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
