COPALIS BEACH, Wash. - A 31-year-old man was killed Saturday night when the pickup he was driving veered off a two-lane coastal highway, crashed through a bridge guardrail and landed in a river.

Troopers said Timothy A. Howe, 31, of Copalis Beach was driving north on Highway 109 about seven miles north of Ocean Shores when he crashed.

An investigation found that Howe was speeding as he approached the Copalis River bridge in a 1977 Chevy pickup at about 8 p.m.

His pickup crossed the highway center line on the bridge, then veered onto the shoulder of the oncoming lane and smashed through the guardrail. The pickup landed on its top in the water below.

Howe was found dead at the scene.

Troopers said inattention and speeding were the primary factors in the crash.

There were no other occupants in the pickup and no other vehicles involved in the crash.
