Multiple crashes make mess of I-5 south commute
FIFE, Wash. -- Those trying to get south out of Seattle toward Tacoma on I-5 Friday afternoon found they were going nowhere fast as three separate incidents blocked several lanes and made for a backup that stretched several miles long.

The first crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. on I-5 south near the King/Pierce County line, blocking two left lanes. As the backup stretched north, another car caught fire near the Enchanted Parkway exit in Federal Way. That crash blocked three lanes.

The backup out of the south end stretched over seven miles.

But then, farther north, a crash involving a semi-truck blocked two right lanes near the I-5/I-90 interchange in South Seattle. The backup from that crash stretched over 7 miles north to Northgate.

The crashes eventually cleared, but the damage had been done, with long delays stretching into the evening on I-5 South -- some reported it took two over two hours to get from Northgate to Tacoma.

There's no word what caused the crashes or how many vehicles were involved, or if anyone was hurt.

Heavy rain fell for much of the afternoon and evening, and rain was expected to continue through late Saturday. Check out our new interactive radar to see how wet it'll be if you venture out this weekend.
