Poll: Good news for R-71, Mallahan, Constantine
SEATTLE -- Referendum 71 appears to have won voters' support while Initiative 1033 has not, according to the results of the Washington Poll.
The poll, which surveyed 724 registered voters statewide, found 56 percent of the voters support R-71 while 39 percent oppose it. Of those who have already voted, 55 percent said they voted in favor of R-71 while 45 percent said they voted against it.
The poll has a 3.6 percent margin of error.
Referendum 71 seeks voter approval of the state's so-called "everything but marriage" law, which grants registered domestic partners the same legal rights as married heterosexuals.
However, Initiative 1033, which would limit the growth of state and local government, appears to be failing, according to poll results.
Poll results indicate 41 percent of state voters support the ballot measure while 46 oppose it. Among early voters, 44 percent said they voted against I-1033 while 36 percent said they voted for it.
In the race for Seattle mayor, the poll leader has changed and the gap has widened.
Joe Mallahan now is leading the race with the support of 39 percent of voters -- a 7-percent lead over Mike McGinn. The poll found 44 percent of voters are likely to vote for Mallahan while 32 percent of voters are likely to choose McGinn come Election Day.
When asked who they'd vote for if the election were to be held today, 45 percent of voters chose Mallahan while 29 percent chose McGinn.
Just one week ago, more voters said they'd vote for McGinn when asked the same question. Last week's numbers, which were compiled before McGinn changed his stance on the deep bore tunnel option as the replacement for the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct, gave McGinn and one-percent lead over Mallahan with a total of 35 percent of voters supporting the then-poll leader.
In the race for King County Executive, Dow Constantine is leading the polls over Susan Hutchison, contrary to indications of previous polls.
Poll numbers show 45 percent of the voters support Constantine while 32 percent of voters support Hutchison. The poll found 47 percent of voters are likely to vote for Constantine while 34 percent will likely vote for Hutchison.
According to poll numbers, Constantine has a greater following within the city of Seattle while Hutchinson is more popular outside city limits. Seventy percent of Seattelites support Constantine while 21 percent support Hutchison. Outside the city, however, 40 percent of voters support Hutchison while 28 percent support Constantine.
The Washington Poll is a non-partisan survey conducted by the University of Washington's School of Social Science. The survey was conducted over the phone using a list of randomly selected phone numbers.
