Former elected official on the run nabbed in Alabama
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- A former Port Orchard City Council member accused of child molestation has been arrested.
Tye C. Moore, 38, was taken into police custody in Helena, Ala. on Tuesday morning, according to Port Orchard Police Det. E.J. Martin.
Moore had been on the run after failing to appear at his arraignment in August 2008. He was to be charged with second-degree child molestation and domestic violence.
Martin said he traced Moore all over the country, from California to Texas, before losing his track. The detective said he got an unexpected break over the weekend when he conducted a Google search of the former city leader's name and learned he had gotten married in Helena in the week of Sept. 16.
The detective contacted Helena police, who confirmed Moore's identity. Helena police officers surrounded Moore's home on Tuesday morning, and arrested him when he emerged from his house around 6:30 a.m., Martin said. Moore was arrested without incident.
Moore is accused of molesting a child under the age of 12 between 2005 and 2008. The abuse is believed to have been ongoing.
He was elected to the city council post in November 2005, but became the center of an investigation just months later.
Moore was removed from office in October 2006 after being found guilty of forging checks from a business to fund his political campaign and cover his political expenses. He was convicted of seven counts of forgery, as well as both first-degree and second-degree theft.
Moore is expected to be extradited back to Western Washington some time next week.
