SEATTLE -- The Seattle Police Officers Guild and Seattle Firefighters Union announced Wednesday that a reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution of whoever is responsible for the killing of a Seattle police officer has grown to $105,000.
Anyone with a tip is asked to call 206-233-5000.
Detectives investigating the murder of Officer Tim Brenton say video from a patrol car's dash camera shows a car similar to the light-colored subcompact from which the fatal shots were fired.
Police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said the video was recorded around the time and vicinity of the Halloween shooting.
Whitcomb called it a vehicle of interest, and said police are continuing to investigate a number of other leads and still asking for tips.
After the shooting that killed Brenton and grazed Officer Britt Sweeney, the attacker's car backed away in an apparent attempt to avoid the police car's camera. Whitcomb said that's a sign the shooting was planned.
Investigators believe Britt hit the fleeing car when she returned fire.
Detectives have been looking through more than a terabyte of video gathered from patrol cars, red light cameras and business surveillance systems in the city's Central District neighborhood.
A source speaking on condition of anonymity said investigators have issued a confidential bulletin with a description, including the make, model and color of the vehicle, to law enforcement officers throughout the state. No license plate number was included in the alert, the source said.
Brenton was a nine-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department. He graduated from West Seattle High School in 1988. His father and his uncle are both retired Seattle police officers.
Brenton's former classmates and colleagues were planning to gather at Pegasus Pizza in West Seattle on Wednesday night to raise funds for the slain family and to remember their friend. The event was organized by the pizzaria's manager, Clara Doray, who attended West Seattle High with Brenton years ago.
"It's so sad, it's so sudden. He was the nicest man, the nicest man," she said. "I mean, that's what hurts so much is he was so nice and we just want to do what we can for the family -- just to come together and just show our support and do everything we can for her (Brenton's wife) and her kids."
Doray said donations will be collected at the event. The KOMO Problem Solvers Fund has made a $1,000 donation.
A public memorial service for Brenton is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. at KeyArena. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and a procession of more than 1,000 vehicles will travel through the city in advance of the service beginning at 9 a.m.
A map of the procession route is below. We will have live coverage of the memorial on komonews.com and KOMO 4 TV.
