Greenwood area hit with 2 more arsons
SEATTLE - Two more businesses were damaged by flames early Thursday in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, and fire investigators said both were deliberately set - bringing to eight the total number of arsons there in recent weeks.

Fire officials said a fire at 3:43 a.m. burned the back porch of an accounting office in the 300 block of NW 85th. Neighbors helped contain the fire, so that it did not extend to the business offices.

"My husband used three fire extinguishers to help keep the fire down until the firefighters got there," said Janice.

The neighbors' action was so quick some of the paper used to start the fire was still there. On some of the envelops there was a name and an address. Those were turned over to police. Damage is estimated at $5,000.

A second fire at 4:11 a.m. burned the exterior of the Rosewood Guitar business at North 84th and Greenwood Ave North. The fire was outside the structure in a 3-foot gap between two buildings.

Bill Clements, the owner of Rosewood Guitar, said none of his merchandise was damaged, but damage to the building's exterior was estimated at $20,000, said fire officials.

"Somebody asked me earlier if I was angry," Clements said. "It's just more sad. It's just tragic and horrible for the community that we have to deal with that sort of thing."

The residents and business owners have reason to worry -- it's a community of wooden buildings, that make tempting targets.

"They are all waiting for an arsonist to come," said Phil Aust, a Greenwood business owner. "I think we need to wait for him."

There were no injuries in any of the fires.

Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen says investigators are determining whether Thursday's fires are related to six other unsolved arsons in the same neighborhood.

The largest fire, on Oct. 23, destroyed four businesses and caused $2 million damage.

An arson on Monday caused an estimated $17,000 in damage to an apartment building in the 13400 block of Greenwood Ave. N., where residents found a rolled up piece of carpet on fire, leaning against a door.

Two other fires were set on Aug. 13 - one at a mixed-use commercial/residential building on N. 98th, the other at a home on NW 84th. The day before, another fire had been set at a home in the 7700 block of Greenwood Ave. N. The string began June 19th with an arson in a vacant restaurant just 10 block away from the Aug. 12 fire.
