Belfair man, 22, shot dead near San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - A young man from Mason County has been found shot to death near San Francisco - but police don't have a clear motive or any suspects in his killing.

Police found the body of 22-year-old Benjamin Merril in a park in in Pittsburg, Calif., northeast of San Francisco, in the early morning darkness Tuesday.

There was no wallet or other identifying information on his body when he was found, and he was known simply as John Doe for days - until a relative who was in the area recognized him from a police sketch.

Investigators say Merril, 2006 graduate of North Mason High School, died from at least one gunshot.

Merrill lived in San Francisco and worked as a waiter at a cafe at Fishermen's Wharf. Family members say he loved San Francisco.

Investigators say it's possible that robbery may have been a motive.
