Christopher M. Monfort
SEATTLE -- King County prosecutors are still reviewing evidence in the murder of
Officer Tim Brenton and say they expect to file charges later this week.
The man suspected in the killing,
Christopher Monfort, remains hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center in serious condition, being treated for gun shot wounds.
Munfort was
shot Friday afternoon in a confrontation with Seattle police detectives at a Tukwila apartment complex.
Investigators who later searched his apartment
found weapons, a huge stash of ammunition, bomb-making materials and newspaper clippings about an
Oct. 22 arson that officers believe he was involved in.
Our news partners at
seattlepi.com reported that fliers left behind at the scene of the torched police cruisers mentioned the case of former King County Sheriff's deputy
Paul Schene, who was accused of beating a 15-year-old girl inside a holding cell. Schene has since been fired from the department.
The criminal trial of Schene was scheduled to begin this week, but prosecutors announced Monday that the trial had been postponed until January.
"That recess was granted due to recent events surrounding a potential connection between the Schene case and the homicide of Officer Brenton," said Ian Goodhew, deputy chief of staff for the prosecutor's office. "There are documents that are part of the Officer Brenton investigation that make reference to this case."
Goodhew said prosecutors are working with Seattle police to review evidence in the arson and Brenton's murder and have not yet reached a charging decision.
"We're reviewing all possible charges including aggravated murder, which includes the possibility of death," he said.
Among the weapons found in Monfort's apartment were two long rifles, including a military-style assault rifle, police said. Components for improvised explosive devices were also found.
In addition, Seattle Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said, there have been reports of loud explosions in the area around Monfort's apartment complex in the past three months.
Those blasts may have been experiments by Monfort and may indicate that he planned a larger-scale terrorist action, Pugel said.
"This man, from everything we can tell, appears to be a lone domestic terrorist," Pugel
said Saturday. "At this moment, we cannot find any ties to anyone else."
Brenton was gunned down Halloween night while seated in a patrol car with rookie officer Britt Sweeney, who also was wounded in the attack. She was able to return fire and call for backup units.
The arrest of Monfort came as a
memorial service for Brenton was concluding at KeyArena.
