7 injured in suspected DUI crash near Sequim
SEQUIM, Wash. - Seven people were injured Saturday evening when a suspected drunk driver crossed the center line of Highway 101 near Sequim and slammed into two oncoming vehicles, the Washington State Patrol reported.
Troopers responded to the scene, about three miles east of Sequim in Clallam County, at about 7:40 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a collision.
Arriving on the scene, troopers and medics found three heavily damaged vehicles and seven people with injuries.
An investigation determined that a 1998 Saturn driven by Raymond U. Arndt Jr., 34, of Port Angeles was heading east on Highway 101 when he veered across the center line and into the lane of oncoming westbound traffic.
The Saturn smashed head-on into a 2000 Toyota Camry being driven by a 61-year-old Port Angeles man, then continued on and crashed into a 1999 GMC Safari.
The driver of the Safari, a 40-year-old man from Victoria, B.C., was taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of injuries. Five passengers in the Safari also sustained injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Arndt, the driver of the Saturn, was taken to Olympic Medical Center for treatment of injures and was then booked into Clallam County Jail.
The State Patrol says DUI is a contributing cause for the crash, and recommended that Arndt be charged with vehicular assault.
