Arlington man arrested on suspicion of killing burglar
NEAR ARLINGTON, Wash. - A 25-year-old man discovered shot to death in a field Wednesday is believed to be the same man who burglarized a home in the area on Monday, police said.

And now the 38-year-old homeowner whose residence was burglarized has been arrested and jailed in connection with the fatal shooting.

The series of incidents began Monday when the homeowner called 911 to report a burglary at his home in the 22800 block of 37th Avenue NE in unincorporated Arlington, said Rebecca Hover of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

The man told Snohomish County sheriff's deputies he had returned home to find the suspect running out of his house, and that some of his wife's jewelry was missing.

Deputies and K-9 police dogs searched for the burglary suspect but didn't find him, Hover said.

A few hours later on Monday, the homeowner called 911 again and said the burglary suspect had returned to the area.

A deputy responded and found the homeowner in the area looking for the burglary suspect. The homeowner said he spotted a man in a nearby ditch along the road and yelled at him to come out and talk to him, but the man ran off across a field and into a wooded area.

The deputy checked the area where the homeowner said he had first spotted the man but didn’t find anything or anyone.

On Wednesday, a neighbor in the same area called 911 and reported finding a body in a small creek that runs through a field on his property in the 23400 block of 35th Avenue NE. The body was that of a white male believed to be in his 20s.

During the course of the investigation Wednesday, detectives learned that neighbors heard gunshots Monday afternoon shortly before the homeowner had called 911 the second time, Hover said.

One witness said he talked to the homeowner, who told him he had fired a couple of "warning shots" at the man he saw running away from him into the field and wooded area.

On Wednesday night detectives spoke to the homeowner. He said he was aware that a body had been discovered in his neighborhood and that he was a part of the case. He requested an attorney.

Detectives then arrested and booked the 38-year-old man in jail for investigation of second-degree murder.

The victim found in the field has been identified as a 25-year-old Snohomish County man.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner examined the body at the scene and discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He also found items on him, including jewelry, that appeared to have been stolen in Monday's burglary.

Hover called the case "unusual."

"The original burglary victim has become our shooting suspect, and the alleged burglary suspect has become our shooting victim," she said in a statement.

Hover said detectives do not have any information indicating the shooting suspect was acting in self-defense.

The case remains under investigation.
