FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Police are checking out a report that someone may be trying to sell a baby on the Craigslist web site.
"According to the web site, there is a person who is pregnant and it looks like she's putting her baby up for adoption and having someone pay the medical bills," said Ray Bank of the Federal Way Police Department.
He said investigators don't have any evidence that anything illegal is going on, since private adoptions are legal as long as they are carried out in accordance with state law.
But he said detectives are conducting an investigation to make sure that those legal requirements are being met - and to make sure the mother and unborn baby are all right.
"We are getting warrants to see if we can get the (mother's) IP address and pursue the investigation further," Bank said.
He said investigators should be able to locate the woman if they can get a warrant.
"We're checking on the welfare of not only the unborn, but also of the mother, and then we're gonna go to the next step to see if criminal activity is there. We are conducting an investigation as we speak," he said.
