Police: Man shot dead in Bellingham street
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Police found a man shot dead in the street late Friday after a 911 caller reported hearing two men arguing, a gunshot and a car speeding away.
Officers and medics arrived at the scene, at East Ivy and North Garden streets, a few minutes after receiving the 911 call, said Mark Young of the Bellingham Police Department.
They found a man about 40 years old lying near a curb on East Ivy street with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim's car was soon found on East Ivy street, with the engine running, the parking brake set and the driver's door open, Young said.
Witnesses said they saw a second vehicle leaving the area after the shooting. It was described as a dark passenger car and was last seen heading north on Garden Street.
Detectives are investigating the crime scene and interviewing potential witnesses.
Bellingham Police Lt. Steve Felmley said it's the first homicide in Bellingham this year.
The name of the victim has not been released pending the notification of his family. An autopsy has been scheduled for the first of the week.
Anyone who has information about this case is asked to call Detective Sgt. Mike Johnston at (360)778-8687.
