Goats help pave way for future by grazing
We just love doing stories about kids. But the kids in this story aren't the ones you're thinking about.
I'm talking goats. 60 goats that belong to Tammy Dunakin came from Vashon Island to the big city, where they had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a construction site just of Rainier Ave South.
"Brush is their thing," says Dunakin.
They're clearing it by eating it.
"I mean they're always hungry. That's a given," says Dunakin, who owns "Rent A Ruminant". She says the goats are more eco-friendly because they're an alternative to using heavy equipment.
"I mean look at it. These guys aren't using a big bulldozer and putting emissions into the atmosphere," says Dunakin.
And it's cheaper for the construction companies.
"I would have to pay five to eight times what I'm paying for these goats", says John Iwanczuk of Saltaire Construction.
And the goats can get the job done in two days.
"If we had people doing this job, it would take at least five days!" Iwanczuk says.
Once they clear the property, a four-story townhouse will go up in that location.
"The residents will have something to talk about," says Iwanczuk with a smile.
