CHEHALIS, Wash. - The suspect in a deadly shooting earlier this month in Olympia was arrested Friday night as he and another person were attempting to flee from authorities near Chehalis, police said.

Officers had been searching for Robert J. Maddaus, 38, since he was identified as the suspect in the killing of Shaun Allen Peterson, who was found shot to death Nov. 16 on an Olympia street.

On Friday, detectives learned that Maddaus was at a residence in Lewis County, and began monitoring his movements, said Lt. Jim Costa of the Olympia Police Department.

As Maddaus was riding with another person south of Chehalis in a red Chevrolet Corvette, police signalled for them to pull over shortly after 11 p.m.

Maddaus and the other occupant attempted to flee the scene, but the Corvette crashed on Rush Road near Napavine.

Chehalis police took Maddaus into custody, with assistance from Lewis County sheriff's deputies and the Washington State Patrol. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

As soon as he is released from the hospital, Maddaus will be booked into the Lewis County Jail for investigation of first-degree murder, Costa said.

Peterson, 40, was found shot to death in the southbound lanes of Capitol Way in Olympia on Nov. 16, and a silver 1993 Jeep Cherokee was seen fleeing from the scene.

Maddaus was publicly identified as the suspect in Peterson's killing on Nov. 20.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting.
