Pierce Co. couple dead in apparent murder-suicide

SUMMIT, Wash. - A Pierce County man apparently shot and killed his girlfriend inside the couple's home on Saturday, then shot himself, officials said.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said, "It appears to be a murder-suicide. ... His (gunshot wound) appeared self-inflicted."

The names of the dead couple were not immediately released. They were found at their duplex in the 4600 block of 72nd Street Court East.

The couple has a 1-year-old son who was at his grandparents' house at the time of the shooting, Troyer said Sunday.

The man, a military veteran who had served a tour in Iraq, may have been a civilian worker under contract for a federal immigration detention center at the Port of Tacoma, Troyer said.

Troyer said the man’s father asked police to check on the couple Saturday morning after receiving an unusual phone call from his son asking him to "please take care of the baby."

When officers arrived at the couple's duplex, at about 9:30 a.m., they found the couple dead of gunshot wounds, Troyer said.

Neighbors described the couple as friendly and quiet.
