ALBANY, Ore. -- A teddy bear placed at the front door of the Oregon State Police office in Albany proved to be as harmless as a teddy bear.

But Employees arriving for work Monday thought it might be a bomb. They evacuated the building, cleared the front parking lot of cars and called in the agency's bomb unit.

An X-ray image showed there were nothing dangerous inside the bear, and the office was re-opened.

State police officials said they believe the bear was left by someone wanting to donate it to a child involved in a traumatic incident.

Police often give stuffed animals to children involved in crashes, fires or other emergencies, and officials said that while local organizations provide most of the toys, people still stop by state police offices to drop off teddy bears and other stuffed animals.

The bear that wasn't a bomb is now in an Oregon State Police sergeant's patrol car.

"Soon, it will be placed in the hands of a child who needs such a buddy," police wrote.
