Bomb squad clears package tossed into McChord
McCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- A bomb squad checked out a suspicious bag that was thrown from a stolen near McChord Air Force Base early Thursday morning, but there was nothing dangerous inside.
Pierce County sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said the stolen vehicle was left right outside the base's north gate, and the driver tossed a backpack over the fence and onto McChord property about 5:15 a.m. before running off.
An Air Force bomb squad used a robot to check the bag, and the things were back to normal by about 8:30 a.m.
The area around the bag was cordoned off, but the gate is not staffed during weekdays so there was no major disruption to traffic or base operations.
"Security is already heightened, and when you're messing around near a military base you're going to get everyone's attention," Troyer said.
