A soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord was killed last week by bomb in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Rusty H. Christian, 24, was killed January 28 while his unit was on patrol in Oruzgan province.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Christian was on his first mission to Afghanistan, and previously served in Iraq.

He is survived by his wife, Amber, and two children, who live in Orting, Wash.

"We would like to thank everyone for their support during this most difficult and trying time," his family said in a statement. "We appreciate the condolences, prayers and acts of kindness that we have received. Rusty was a man who deeply loved his family and believed that he was making a difference in the fight against terror."
