Officer assaulted after chase, crash
SEATTLE -- Investigators are looking for a man who crashed an SUV during a chase early Wednesday morning and assaulted a police officer.
Officials said the incident began about 12:45 a.m. when the officer tried to pull the driver over for a traffic violation near the intersection of North 90th and Aurora Avenue North.
The driver refused to stop and sped away. Officers said the chase was quickly called off, but the fleeing driver crashed into a house a few blocks away.
The man tried to run and the officer chased him down. Officials said the man punched the female officer in the face and tried to take her gun.
She continued to chase the man, but he got away.
The officer was taken to a hospital to be checked out and was expected to recover.
Officers searched the area using a police dog, but the man, who is in his 20s, remains at large. No detailed description was available.
The people inside the home where the SUV crashed were not injured.
Greg Roberts was watching TV when the vehicle smashed through a wall just a few feet from where he was sitting.
"I'm really disappointed by his driving ability," Roberts said. "Why don't you go to driving school if you're going to be a criminal? It's just ridiculous."
