WSP investigating 'concerning' letters sent to lawmakers

SEATTLE -- The Washington State Patrol is investigating what troopers call "concerning communication" made to state lawmakers.

Troopers said several lawmakers and aides reported having received excessively harsh letters from several people on a variety of topics this week. Among the letters was a harsh criticism of the
Senate's recent suspension of Initiative 960, a voter initiative that required a two-thirds majority in the Legislature for approval of any tax increase.

Investigators are focusing on one of the writers whose tone and intensity appeared to have escalated through a series of letters.

These letters do not quality as threats, troopers said, but they're being investigated due to their tone and wording.

All state lawmakers have been alerted about the investigation.
