SPANAWAY, Wash. -- A woman in her 80s has been critically injured in a house fire in Spanaway.

Investigators say Margie Miller made it to the phone to call 911 when the fire broke out around 3 a.m., but couldn't speak.

Dispatchers traced the call and discovered fire crews were already nearby responding to a different call. They quickly arrived at the burning home near the intersection of 156th Street East and 7th Ave East.

Firefighters found the elderly woman unconscious in the house and rushed her to a hospital.

Officials said the woman inhaled a lot of smoke and her lungs are severely damaged. She's on a ventilator at the hospital, where she is surrounded by family members.

"I'm just hoping she's alright and pulls though this," said neighbor Sabrina Boland. "We're just praying for her."

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Matt Holm said there was a working smoke alarm in the house, and it may have alerted the woman.

The woman's dog died in the fire.

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started.
