Brazen thief steals cookie money from Girl Scout
TACOMA, Wash. - A local girl is shaken up after a crook swiped hundreds of dollars from her that she collected selling Girl Scout cookies.
The robbery happened Thursday evening outside a Safeway grocery store in Tacoma, and now police are on the lookout for the thief.
Sixteen-year-old Beverly Reed was selling boxes of ever-popular Girl Scout cookies at the store when a man ran up and snatched the cash.
The thief got away with $465.
Beverly said she has been selling Girl Scout cookies every year since she was 6 years old, never imagining someone would heartlessly steal her hard-earned money.
"I've been doing this for 10 years, and that's never happened to me, and that last weekend of cookies - and someone just steals from me, and that's very upsetting," she says, breaking down in tears.
Beverly said the man ran up, grabbed the cash located in a folder, and ran off, leaving her heartbroken.
"He'd been watching me for a very long time, about an hour and a half, and I started to pack up my cookies, and he pushed past my mom, grabbed my money and ran off," she says. "I yelled at him, I said, 'Are you serious?' No response."
But the next day, Beverly was back out selling cookies, and word spread among customers of her experience.
"I would think we had better people in the world than that - but there's always the weirdos," said Melissa, who stopped by to buy a box of cookies from Beverly.
Another woman gave Beverly $100 to help make up her loss.
The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she did it "because I feel children shouldn't be abused in that nature. I think they work hard for what they get, and I believe in justice, because - it's wrong."
