JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Fifty soldiers based at Lewis-McChord are now back with loved ones, after returning Sunday from a year overseas.
Returning with them was Lt. Gen. Charles Jacoby, one of the top U.S. generals in Iraq, who says the I Corps troops superbly accomplished their mission in Iraq.
The 50 troops landed in a massive C-17 transport plane, all the way from Baghdad. The soldiers spent a year in Iraq, preparing Iraqi forces to take over security responsibilities.
They arrived to a heroes' welcome - marching proud and strong as their families waited to reunite after being apart for so long.
Andrea Goff found her husband, Staff Sgt. Brian Goff, and gave him a heartwarming hug making up for the long year apart.
Lt. Gen. Jacoby led the group. He was the No. 2 general in charge of all troops in Iraq - and says I Corps strengthened that country and prepared it for elections on March 7.
I Corp based here has transferred authority now to another Army corps in Iraq.
As for Lt. Gen. Jacoby - he's moving on from this group, and right now going through confirmation process to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations.
