SNOHOMISH COUNTY -- One person was killed after being struck by a car in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 on Friday, according to Washington State Patrol.

Witnesses told troopers the man walked across several lanes of traffic on the interstate before a Ford pickup truck hit him in the car pool lane at 236th Street around 5:30 p.m. He died at the scene.

The person has not been identified. It is not known why the person was trying to cross the interstate.

The name of the pickup driver is not known. It is not known whether he faces any charges.

The crash shut down the HOV lane and caused a backup in the northbound lanes for some time.
